In 5 steps: How is wine made?

Maybe you drink gallons of wine yourself, but you have no idea how wine is made. That's why we're going to briefly explain how wine is made. Because such a delicious grape juice is not just made.

1. With love from the ground.

Your bottle starts in a vineyard, where the seed grows with love from the farmer into a plant that produces grapes. The grapes are then picked by hand or by a machine. The advantage of picking by hand is that the grapes are not damaged and therefore remain as beautiful as you are!

2. Pressing the grapes.

After picking, the grapes are gently pressed, removing the stems because they give a sour taste. Of course, we don't want that! When pressing, all the delicious flavours are released from the skin and the pulp of the grape. The juice from this is called must.

3. Fermenting the wine.

After pressing the grapes, the juice, or must, slowly begins to change. First, the yeast converts the sugars in the juice into alcohol. This turns the juice into young wine, which often still tastes a little sour due to the malic acid present. Then the wine enters the second changes. At Marwijn we call this the puberty of the wine. In this, the malic acid is converted into a somewhat softer substance, which gives the wine a better taste. After this, the wine is filtered to remove unwanted substances.

4. That sums it up!

The filtered wine is stored in barrels to mature. Some take longer than others, just like people. Eventually, each barrel reaches the desired taste for the type of wine. Most wines are stored for several months to mature.

5. Let's drink.

This is probably the most familiar step for you. You can uncork that beautiful bottle to enjoy with a bite and a laugh! Enjoyment is part of life, and sometimes a glass of wine is allowed!
